Learning shouldnt be a difficult process but I often find that for people like me it certainly can be.
When given a lot of information all at once I have trouble getting it all straight in my mind. If a person is going on and on about a subject without really organizing what theyre saying I just cant follow anything coming out of them.
The same is going to be true for when someone is trying to explain things in writing. Ive read my share of textbooks meant to teach me about something, where I couldnt follow any of it. They presented the information to me all at once without really stopping to tell me what each thing was, one thing at a time.
I dont think Im alone when it comes to things like this, and anyone thinking about booklet printing should be aware of this concern.
Often booklets cover very complex and difficult topics. This is why theyre in the form of a booklet because no other format gave the person writing enough room to work with. They need that extra space to get their point across.
The first thing you need to do is break down what youre going to talk about in a more simplistic, point by point fashion. Part of this has to do with have a good index at the beginning letting a person know what the order of the points are so they can easily flip to a single one, but I would go further than just that.
The beginning of each new point should have a headline that covers the basic details of what is about to be discussed. By just looking at that title I should be able to figure out what Im going to be reading about, which frames the information. Now I know where Im starting from, making it easier for me to follow what is being said.
Another added bonus is that it lets a person flip through your booklet and come away with all of the basic points you were trying to discuss. If they dont read any further they still leaned something, and if theyre just seeing if the booklet is worth reading, youre giving them easy access to the information about to be discussed, encouraging them to take a closer look.
Booklet printing is typically done with a set audience in mind. Because of the length of booklets not everyone is going to bother sitting down to read them, so you have to be thinking of a certain group. If you know who youre trying to aim your writing at than you need to be sure that this group is going to be able to easily understand what you have to say. Even if they dont know anything about the subject matter, they still need to be able to quickly latch onto your subject, and come away fully informed. Thats the mark of a great booklet.
